My Childhood Memories of Days in Perry Street
We had such fun in Perry Street when we were all quite small,
Our little gangs of boys and girls numbered about ten in all,
We enjoyed a game of "kick tin" around the old lamp post,
And many's the time someone would say
They thought they had seen a ghost.
We had whips and tops and skipping ropes, we played with them for
hours
Then when a little older we loved the dear old bikes of ours.
We had picnics in the daisy field
We scrumped apples in Shears Green
When we saw a "Bobby" we made sure we wouldn't be seen
Very often we went to the pictures, our favourite films to see
Not dreaming that a few years on we'd watch them on T.V.
There were air-raids in the night-time and doodle bugs by day
We didn't let them get us down , We still went out to play
There were air-raid wardens on patrol and as they walked about
If only a small light was seen they would shout "Put that light
out"
As we grew a little older we had sweethearts, it was true
We drew hearts with chalk, and our initials, with an arrow running
through
As we chased along the alleys, there was no danger there
Just our little gang together, playing "truth or dare"
We loved Christmas time and parties
That old piano in the front room
We sang of "The Old Lamp Lighter"
And "Shine On Harvest Moon"
Our summer holidays from school seemed long and sunny and hot
Looking back it seems to me rain rarely came to our little spot
We used to go to "Hobbsies" shop to buy our favourite sweets
There were golly bars and blackjacks, and sherbet dabs, - such
treats
There were sticky toffee apples made by Mrs Ray
And at "Fletchers" on the corner, Monday was ice cream day
I could go on for hours about those happy days
With all the fun and laughs we had in our childhood ways
The memories live forever, more precious than silver or gold
Such wonderful timed to remember, now we are growing old
